 Today's Sailing News 

 August WX in Muskegon

Despite temperatures in the 40's and a cool easterly wind that gives the impression that 'fall is in the air', Muskegon had slightly above average warmth in August.  The month ended with 6 days of above normal temperatures.  This streak hauled temperatures up to +.3° for the month.

Appropriately the last day, Thursday the 31st was warmest at 87°.  Sunday the 20th saw the low temp of the month 48°.  

August saw an average wind speed of 7.4 knots.  This is .1 lower than July.

The windiest day was Tuesday the 15th at 11.2 knots.  Thursday the 24th was the lightest wind day at 2.3 knots.

As the table below shows south the most popular and warm wind direction.  By a slight margin days with west wind were above norm in temps.

Precipitation for August in Muskegon was 2.25 inches.  This is well below the norm of 3.41".

Swedish Match Tour

The 2000 Swedish Match Sailing Tour is down to one event.  The upcoming event in Bermuda will not decide the title tour.  Frenchman Bertrand Pace clinched the title at the Danish Open sailed 15-20 August.

Pace finished second to Swede Magnus Holmberg who won his second consecutive event.  American Ed Baird was 3rd, Dane Sten Mohr 5th.  Representing Team New Zealand Cameron Appleton was 5th.  Even with a win of the Bermuda event, Team New Zealand can't overtake points leader Pace.

Another close points battle in Bermuda will be Magnus Holmberg in 3rd with 72 trying to fend off Peter Gilmour only a point back.

The Bermuda event will have a star filled, interesting line up.  Along with defending champion Andy Green of Great Britain, America's Cup winners Russell Coutts, Dean Barker and Dennis Conner are entered.  Among the other entries are: Ed Baird, Peter Gilmour, Magnus Holmberg and Peter Holmberg.

The waters off Bermuda should be filled with interesting rivalries and match ups 22 to 29 October.
