Today's Sailing NewsVendee Globe: Countdown4 days of waiting remain for the 24 sailors in this non stop solo around the world race. Final preparations and good byes are being made. Kingfisher's Ellen Macarthur will leave
her dog in England. According to Ellen,
"neighbors collected some of Mac’s hair and wove the
‘fleece’ into a memento for me to carry with me on the race."
Also, Ellen will carry socks made of dog hair. These were given
to her by Viktor Yazykov who wore such socks during Around
Alone. The Bay is notorious for punishing autumnal gales. In fact, the last few days have seen gale force winds in the start area. Current weather observations show winds as high as 35 knots from the west and north west. Winds such as these would put test the boats from the off.

Today's Sailing NewsTeam Philips: Calvin resignsTeam Philips is once again on the hard. When the Race Class catamaran returns to the sea in mid to late November she will be without crewman Mike Calvin. Mike Calvin gave these reasons for resigning: "I continue to believe in the potential of the boat, and the people involved in the project, but Pete and I have agreed to disagree about the nature of its development. Put simply, I do not believe there is sufficient time to prepare for The RACE." Not a word on who will replace Calvin and bring the crew back up to its full 6 man compliment.
