Match Racing: Bermuda Gold Cup

The racing between unseeded skippers had its second day.  One group was able to finish racing, and send its top 4 skippers on.  The other groups racing was blown out.

Topping Group 2 were a pair of American sailors, Andy Horton at 6-1 and Dalton Bergen at 5-2.  Next came Aussie Olympian Neville Whittey and then Team New Zealand backup skipper Cameron Appleton.

Among the sailors who failed to move on are John Cutler, Chris Larson and Jes Gram-Hansen.

When Group 1 resumes racing, there are 5 sailors in a position to take one of the 4 qualifying spots.  They are:  Chris Dickson, Murray Jones, Sten Mohr, Kelvin Harap and James Spithill.

Once the qualifying rounds are finished on Tuesday, the qualifying unseeded skippers move into a Wimbledon-style knock-out series, meeting the eight seeded skippers.  Among the matchups will be Andy Horton against Russell Coutts and Dalton Bergen against Ed Baird.

Volvo Ocean Race News

California Mark Rudiger navigator of EF Language which won the last Whitbread round the world race will be co-skipper and navigator of ASSA ABLOY's entry in the 2001/2002 Volvo Ocean Race (previously the Whitbread Round The World Race).  

Rudiger's first task is to select crew and build a training regimen for the next year.

Sailing Records: Middle Sea Race

The Middle Sea race is held over a six hundred and twenty mile course in the Mediterranean Sea.  The racers  start from Malta, sailing northwards to the Straits of Messina, further north around the island volcano of Stromboli, then westwards between two of the Egadi Islands, southwards for Pantelleria and Lampedusa and finally eastwards to Malta.

"Zephyrus IV" the holder of the Cape to Rio race record finishes at 0349 this morning to set a new course record of 64 hours 49 minutes and 57 seconds and average speed of 9.56.  Zephyrus IV's voyage receives a Sailing Record score of 72.45. The previous record was held by Riviera Di Rimini in a time of 72 hours 50 minutes.
