 BT Challenge: Leg 2 starts

The BT Challenge fleet started Leg 2 in Boston Massachusetts yesterday.  Destination is Buenos Aries Argentina.

The 12 boat fleet faces 5840 miles of sailing.  They are expected to spend approximately 35 days at sea.  Ballpark arrival time is 18 November in the Southern Hemisphere.

Winds at the start were light from the southwest. Crews changed often trying to play the slight breeze to best advantage.

The light air is not expected to last long.  Today winds of 20-30 knots from the NW are expected, with 35 knots tomorrow.

The fleet has passed Cape Cod, using either spinnakers or reaching headsails.

This Grade 1 match race event saw 10 sailors compete.  Amongst them Russell Coutts, and Francesco De Angelis the skippers of the past America's Cup final.

Both showed rust from being away from one on one sailing.  De Angelis finished 2-7.  One of his wins was against Coutts.  Coutts finished 4-5.

Winner of the event was Frenchman Luc Pillot with 8 wins and a loss.  He won via a tiebreaker.  His victory over Andy Green separated his 8-1 record from Green. 3rd was James Spithill at 6-3, with Jesper Radich Johansen 4th with a 5-4 record.

Only one round robin was completed due to weather, so rather than a semi final and final tie breakers had to be applied to the round robin scores.

The Times Clipper Race featuring 8 60 footers sponsored by cities started yesterday. Sponsoring cities are: Bristol, Glasgow, Jersey, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Plymouth and Portsmouth.  As with the BT Challenge crews pay to sail in this race.

Leg 1 takes the fleet from Portsmouth England, to Cuba via the Atlantic Ocean.
