Mumm 30 Worlds

The 4th annual world championships are being hosed by Storm Trysail Club.  Sailing Venue is the Atlantic Ocean off Miami Beach.

2 races were sailed.  Conditions were SE winds @ 12-16 knots.

The 5 leg first race was a showcase for Michigan sailors.  Tom Ritter's Tramp led the fleet to the first windward mark.  Maximum Dread was 2nd.

By the 4th mark Maximum Dread was in the lead.  They held this lead to the finish followed by Phil Garland's Trouble then USA 65 and Tom Ritter in Tramp.

Maximum Dread turned a pin end start into a wire to wire victory in race 2.  2nd was defending world champion USA 48, with Italian Alverto Signorini's Seven in 3rd place.

Needless to say with 2 bullets Maximum Dread sits in 1st.  2nd is USA 65 which was twice 4th.  3rd is Seven, with 10 points.  Next is USA 48 with 12 and Region Ile De France with 14 points.

7 races remain on the schedule including 3 scheduled for today.   The regatta is being scored on a no discard basis with all results counting.

Vendee Globe:  Start Today

The start of the solo, non stop, around the world Vendee Globe will occur at 1011 eastern/1611 French time today.

WNW winds of 10-15 knots are expected.  Overnight as the fleet heads for Spain winds are expected to increase to 10-20 knots from the NW.  This should make for a speedy beam reach.

 Today's Sailing News 

The ISAF has presented is Sailor of the Year Awards.  The awards are sponsored by Sperry.

Winning the female honor was Shirley Robertson of Great Britain.  Robertson's achievements include a Gold Medal in the Europe Class at the Sydney Olympics, a 2nd place finish at the Europe worlds, 3rd at the 1999 ISAF Women's Match Racing World Championship and a #6 ranking in Women's match racing.

The men's honor was won by Americans Mark Reynolds and Magnus Liljerdahl.  Their achievements included:  winning the Star worlds, winning the Star Class at Kiel Week and a comeback Gold Medal at the Sydney games also in the Star Class.

Torresen Sailing Spite also sponsors Male and Female Sailor of the Year awards.  Voting is done by visitors to the Torresen Sailing Site.

TSS visitors seem to agree with the Mark Reynolds choice as her currently leads the Torresen Sailing Site Male Sailor of the Year Voting.

However, Italy's Allesandra Sensini leads the female voting.  ISAF winner Robertson is 3rd.
