 Today's Sailing News 

Vendee Globe: 3 days to start

Of primary concern at the start of any race is weather.  The forecast for Saturday off Les Sables d’Olonne is as bad as any mariner would want.

Gale force winds of 40-50 knots from the South West are a possibility.  Low pressure systems of under 1000 milibars are in the Atlantic ocean bringing the gale winds with them.

What effects the weather has on the start, ranging from a postponement to few spectators remains to be seen.
 

BT Challenge Update

Leader: LG Flatron by 104 miles.

Location: Leaders nearing the equator.

Best 24 hour run: Norwich Union 196 Miles

illbruck challenge adds AC

Already entered in the upcoming Volvo Ocean Race, the German illbcruck sailing team has added an America's Cup Challenge to its endeavors.

Illbruck will begin with a 1 boat challenge for the 2002-2003 America's Cup.  Their long term goal is to win the cup in 2006 with a bigger effort.

The illbruck family and company have a long term involvement in sailing with several Pinta Admirals Cup challenges.  Michael illbruck commented: "It is a natural progression for the team to compete in the Volvo Ocean Race, the world's most challenging offshore sailing race - and then pursue the America's Cup, the most challenging match race and the toughest sailing event to win. These two events are recognized worldwide as the pinnacle of the sport."

The illbruck sailing team is led by John Kostecki.  Next up for the sailing team is training for the Volvo Ocean race in Fremantle Australia.  America's Cup training will begin in June of 2002, after the team completes the Volvo Ocean race.

Location: 28° North, 20° west. east of the Canary Islands.

Best 24 hour run: Liverpool Clipper 102 miles

Current Conditions: Wind 050 @ 13 knots.

Forecast: Moderate southerly winds
