Match Racing: World Championships reach Semi Finals

The World Match Racing Championship has now reached the semi final stage. The four semi finalists are: Peter Gilmour (JPN), Dean Barker (NZL), Sten Mohr (DEN) and Bertrand Pace (FRA).

These four sailors and their crews managed to attain the semi finals despite little wind over the weekend. The lite and fluky conditions seemed to affect Pace the most as he won only 3 of 11 races in the second round robin.

By virtue of finishing the round robins first, Peter Gilmour was able to choose his semi final opponent. He went with the Dane Sten Mohr. This has proved a good choice as Gilmour swept Mohr 2 races to 0.

This left Barker to face Pace in the other Semi final. Pace came back from an off form round 2 and won the first match of the semi's. Barker was the race 2 and race 3 winner.

The finals will be best of five in format with past world champion Gilmour facing recent America's cup winning helmsman Dean Barker.

Olympic Sailing: Results of US Olympians at Spa Regatta

Solo Racing: Europe 1 Transatlantic

Sunday 4 June will see 70 plus boats with only one sailor aboard start from Plymouth England. The Europe 1 fleet will sail to Newport Rhode Island. This race has been run since 1960 making it the original offshore single handed race.

This week Sailing Daily will provide a look at the past winners, at the race records and at the competitors and yachts that will chase them. Finally on Friday we will look at the conditions with which the sailors will have to deal with and how this might affect new records.

1972: Alain Colas 20 days 13 hours 15 minutes (new record) Speed: 5.70

1976: Eric Tabarly 23 days 20 hours 12 minutes Speed: 5.85

1980: Phild Weld 17 days 23 hours 12 minutes (New Record) Speed: 6.51

1984: Yvon Fauconnier 16 days 6 hours 25 minutes (new record) Speed: 7.19

1988: Phillipe Poupon 10 days 9 hours 15 minutes (new record) Speed: 11.27

1992: Loick Peyron 11 days 1 hour 35 minutes Speed: 10.58

1996: Loick Peyron 10 days 10 hours 5 minutes Speed: 11.24

There have been two sailors who have won multiple times Loick Peyron and Eric Tabarly. With Tabarly passed away and Peyron not sailing a new winner will emerge.
