Club Med Launched
The 33 M Ollier designed Catamaran was launched today in France. It is the 3rd new multi hull launched for The Race. Along the the launching came the announcement of the crew. Skipper Grant Dalton has chosen a 16 man group hailing from 9 nations. Included are Bobby Campbell most recently the project manager of the Aloha Racing America's Cup campaign. Weather router Roger Badham and bowman Curtis Blewett were involved with the America One group. From New Zealand comes Mike Quilter a several time Whitbread veteran. The French members of the crew have large multi hull experience either on Explorer or on other Jules Verne record attempts. New Zealand : Grant Dalton, Mike Quilter, Paul QuinnAustralia : Roger "Clouds" Badham, Mitch Booth Austria : Gerald Moosbrugger Japan : Toru Kikuchi USA : Bobby Campbell Great Britain : Neal Mc Donald, Ed Danby, Jason Carrington France : Fred Le Peutrec, Jacques Caraes, Nicolas Pichelin Spain : Guillermo Altadill Canada : Curtis Blewitt Club Med will remain in port at Vannes France for a few more days. 19 May will be the date of her shake down cruise. By June she will be sailing the Discovery Route in order to qualify for The Race. In July Club Med will attempt to break the west to east transatlantic record. It will be interesting if this French designed and built boat will avoid the teething problems of Playstation and Team Philips rivals for The Race. 8 Teams qualify for Soling TrialsEight 3 person teams have qualified for the Soling match racing trails next month. Winner of the fleet racing qualifier was Ed Baird's team with 4 wins and 20 points. Next was Andrew Horton's team with 2 wins and 24 points. 3rd was Jeff Madrigal's bunch with 2 wins and 29 points. 4th was Mark Mendenblatt's boat with 0 wins and 34 points. Mendenblatt recently finished 2nd in the Laser Olympic trials. Baird, Horton and Madrigal are experienced match racers making it likely that one of them will helm the USA's Soling in Sydney.
