1st Passage Record for PlaystationSteve Fossett's 105 foot catamaran Playstation has achieved her first ocean passage record. Sailing from Newport to Bermuda Playsation covered the 635 miles in 38 hours and 35 minutes. Average speed is computed at 16.45 knots. Playstation departed from Newport @ 1155 eastern on Wednesday. The first evening at sea winds were 25-35 knots from the North West. At the 21 hour mark Playstation had transited the Gulf Stream. 360 miles had been covered at an average of 17.1 knots. The remainder of the distance saw Playsation battle big breeze. The last 12 hours saw winds over 40 knots. Playstation met this winds by stripping down to just a triple reefed main. Shifting to bare poles was given consideration. This dicey sailing lowered the speed. to 16.45 knots. Still Playstation's passage is the 6th fastest on the list of ocean records. Of those top 6 passages it is the 2nd longest. For more information on records visit Torresen Sailing Site Sailing News Service's comprehensive sailing records section.
