1 month down for wrong way Monnet

French sailor Phillippe Monnet left France on 10 January. The purpose of his voyage is to break the record for fastest circumnavigation sailing east to west, or against the prevailing winds. He is sailing an Open 60 monohull UUNET. British Sailor Mike Golding is the current record holder at 161 days. Sailing Daily will provide periodic reports tracking the success of his attempt.

One month ago Phillipe Monnet sailed UUNET from Brest France.  This month has taken him to 35° south putting him off Uruguay.  Life off this part of South America has been windless.  This has put Monnet in a foul mood.  He commented, ""I’m biding my patience but I’m not in a very good mood".

Even with the slowing of progress UUNET expects to see Cape Horn early next week.  Don't expect Monnet to make a sharp right hand turn around Cape Horn.  His route plan is to go as far south as 70° latitude.  This is more dangerous, but also a shorter course.

 

Attention Schock Owners

Sailing Daily reader George Norkus sent the following item.  If you own a W.D. Schock produced boat the below is for you.

W.D. Schock is interested in having an “Invitational” somewhere East.
It’s basically up to us owners to find a PLACE, and enough committed
PEOPLE that will DEFIANTLY show up. The type boats can be anything made
by WD Schock but keep in mind that if the final location is inland, it
would be a trailerable event as the larger W.D. Schock boats could never
make it, but that’s okay if only smaller sailboats show an interest.
 
The place could be a nice Park, a Yacht Club, or ??? Possibly this would
be for a two, three or more day event. It should have a gathering
location (home port), a ramp, and a hoist. As of now, interest has been
expressed for Cleveland, Ohio and the Kentucky Lake area. What is your
suggestion?
 
Let’s get this event going! Pass the word around! If you or anyone you
know owns a WD Schock product let me know! (I understand over 60 models
were built since 1946!)
