Team Philips Abandoned 

The crew of Team Philips are now safely onboard the container ship Hoechst Express after abandoning the Race Class catamaran.

Sailing 750 miles west of Ireland the catamaran lost most of its steering
system. Large waves also damaged the central pod where the crews quarters
are located.

The damage meant that Team Philips could only maintain a NE course. As this would take them away from the shipping lanes and possible rescue the decision to
abandon was made.

The crew donned survival suits, contacted their families and awaited transfer.

According to Mark Orr of Team Philips shoreside team, ""It is a difficult decision but we have always underpinned this project with safety and seamanship. It is not a panic decision, but a decision we have taken in the interests of safety."


By 0830 GMT the 7 man crew was onbaord the Hoechst Express. They will contine to Nova Scotia on the ship.

The catamaran will be tracked. When the weather abates a recover may be made.

According to Bruno Peyron of The Race:"Pete Goss and his team are responsible sailors and undoubtedly made the best decision. The sailors are healthy and safe and the boat was left in a configuration allowing an operation of recovery as soon as the conditions are more favorable."

2001 Lake Michigan Sailing Calendar

'Tis the season to be compiling the 2001 Lake Michigan Sailing Calendar. This publication is in its 3rd season. It attempts to cover events of interest to sailors on the Great Lakes. Generally it starts with the Strictly Sail Boat show and carries through to fall racing.

The summer fixtures such as the Queens Cup, Mackinac races etc. are generally easy to pin down. Events that aren't easy to identify are one design class championships. For instance last year saw the 210 Class championships at Gull Lake, 1999 the J 24 North Americans in Chicago. These events can be difficult to include as the venue shifts each year.

If you know of a one design class that is holding a championship regatta on the Great Lakes in 2001, we need to hear from you.
