News from the race course


8 to 10 knots of breeze greeted the boats contesting Flight 5.  The Team Dennis Connner/Young America match was postponed.

Nippon continued it's undefeated run through round 3.  Today they beat the 6th place Spanish Challenge by 1' 19'.  Nippon skipper Peter Gilmour controlled Spain at the start leading by 30 seconds.  From there Nippon sailed well, with a lead as big as 1' 23' at the 2nd windward mark.

The Prada/America One race show a reversal of the normal formula.  The essence of this reversal was Prada's pre start mistake.  Prada had hooked America One.  However, Prada misjudged and instad of making contact with the side of America One, they put their bow into America One's transom.  This resulted in a penalty for failure to give America One room and opportunity to keep clear and failure to avoid collission.  Prada carried this penalty the entire race.

At the final windward mark Prada led by 37 seconds.  However, they chose to wait until the finish to perform the 270 degree turn.  The previous downwind legs had seen America One gain 8 seconds and they gained again on the final leg.  America One was close enough to get the gun while Prada completed the penalty turn.

America One used Prada's formula.  They didn't win by boatspeed or even tactics just fewer mistakes.  This puts Amierca One a single point behind Prada in the standings.
