Some New Sailing Web
Sites Announced This Week Torresen Marine, will again this year provide start to finish coverage of the Chicago Yacht Club's Chicago to Mackinac Race. The Torresen Chicago Yacht Club's 89th Annual Chicago to Mackinac Race Page includes the Notice of Race, schedule of important dates and events, and a contact list. The site will be a great resource for racers and observers from now until the race is completed. It will include racer profiles, news from the start line, along the race course and at the finish line. The Torresen Sailing Page will have staff sending up to date information from the race as it happens. Data will include weather conditions, spotter reports and results. This is the second year of Torresen coverage for this race. Updates and results from the 1995 race can be found at www.torresen.com/chimac.htm. In an effort to make the race more real to friends and families onshore, the page will include details about the participants and their boats. Any racers interested in having a boat and crew profile on-line can fax the infromation to (616) 755-1522 or e-mail mac_watch@torresen.com. Fans and participants can also send photos and stories of past Chi-Mac adventures to the same address. |
| ABC Television and ESPN will broadcast the next Whitbread race and air 28 hours of coverage, plus two one-hour live programs--one each from Annapolis and Fort Lauderdale, the two U.S. stops on the best-known round-the-world sailing race. The race is scheduled for 1997-98. Veteran sailing reporter Bob Fisher reports in Grand Prix Sailor that there will be 18 bi-weekly half-hour programs, two one-hour race previews and a one-hour review after the finish. "The Whitbread became a television phenomenon with coverage last time in more than 140 different countries, probably greater coverage than was realized in the print media of many of them," Fisher says. The International Yacht Restoration School, a non-profit organization teaching skills, history and related sciences involved in the restoration of classic yachts, has an eleven week summer program from June 9 to August 24 in Newport, RI. Classes are open to everyone over the age of 16 and younger students may attend if accompanied by an adult. Previous boat building experience is not necessary. Contact IRYS at 401I849-3060. The Around Alone single-handed round-the-world race will no longer be sponsored by BOC (the former British Oxygen Corp.) BOC has retained Great Adventure Partnership to seek new sponsorship for the race and to run it the next time in 1998-99. Evidently, the race became too big for BOC, which cut it loose. Current plans call for the same format--start and finish in the U.S., and a single-handed Transatlantic race from Europe in the summer of 1998. According to Nigel Rowe, the retired BOC executive responsible for BOC's involvement for many years, negotiations are at an advanced stage with a number of host ports, the race rules review is almost done and some sponsorship has already been secured. Rowe will be event director.
