Fluid Dynamic Experts Bolster Design Team

SOUTH PORTLAND, ME, May 15, 1997- Two of the world's preeminent computational fluid dynamic experts, Bruce Rosen and Joe Laiosa, have joined the NYYC/Young America design team.

Bruce Rosen, founder and President of South Bay Simulations in Babylon, N.Y., and four-time America's Cup design veteran, is developer of the SPLASH free-surface code, the world's premier CFD software for design and analysis of racing yachts. Rosen will be responsible for the hydrodynamic CFD aspects of the NYYC/Young America yacht design program.

In the design process, Rosen will apply SPLASH and other computer tools as an "electronic test tank" to analyze hull form and appendage characteristics which are otherwise researched only by means of towing tank or wind tunnel experiments.

In 1995, Rosen was a member of the oneAustralia design team, producing one of the fastest Challenger IACC yachts. He also made the SPLASH code available for the 1995 Young America design program. In addition, Rosen brings extensive experience in the aerospace industry and with NASA.

Joe Laiosa is an aero/hydro design and analysis consultant who has been involved with the design of high-performance military aircraft since 1979. Laiosa contributed to the successful design of Stars & Stripes '87. Laiosa consulted to the initial Partnership for America's Cup Technology (PACT) organization for the 1992 Defense. He also played an important role in the 1995 Young America design program as an aero/hyrdo design team member specializing in free surface CFD studies using the SPLASH code.
