Soling Worlds- Close Regatta Concludes
Saturday at 1652 the last race of the
Soling World Championship regatta became
official. At this point, Shaiduko/Komarov/Volchkov
from Russia clinched the Soling world title. They
racked up the following finishes: 13-(24)-8-16
-1-10-2-11-15. Only 2 top 10 finishes in 9 races,
and they still won the regatta. This attests to
the tremendously competive fleet.
Finishing in 2nd were the Ukranian team
of Pichugin/Korotkov/Timokhov. They were only 2
points out of 1st. 3rd were Cian/Fornelli/Colaninno
of Italy. They were a further 5 points back.
4th was where the top United Stats boat finished.
Sailing USA 838 were Harry Melges III/Hans Melges
and Brian Porter. They accumulated 122.7 points,
putting them 10 out of 1st. Although this team
had 4 top 10 finishes, they also had to keep
some deeper finishes such as a 21 in their
final score line.

Around Alone News- Damaged Boats
    Thursday nite, threatening weather
hit Charleston and the assembled Around Alone
fleet. The weather was courtesy of Hurricane
Earl.
During the storm Around Alone competitor
Neil Hunter's Paladin II was dismasted. What
bad luck to have sailed her on her own bottom
from Australia and then to lose the mast in a
freak dockside accident.
Neil is making progress on finding a
new mast and hopes to be ready for the September
26th start. If you know of a mast that would fit a
Farr 40 please call the Arond Alone Office at
843 853 1500. If you wish to send a donation
you can mail them to the following address:
Neil Hunter C/O Around Alone

Meanwhile, the damage report is in.
Mike Golding's Class I entry Group 4 was
damaged when it was blown off its cradle
August 31st.
The main aspect of the damage is a
5 foot by 5 foot hole near the stern. This
is more cosmetic than structural damage.
Also, damaged were a deck spreader
and a rudder. The goal for Group is to be
back in the water and sailing on Sunday
September 20th, 6 days before the start of
Around Alone.
    Russian entrant Modern University for
the Humanities has arrived in Charleston.
Fedor Konioukhov had a tough trans atlantic
voyage as he had an encounter with Hurricane
Danielle. In particular his engine swallowed
some salt water and is not well. Repairs
have begun and Modern University for the
Humanities is expected to be on the line
September 26th. For a first person report from
Fedor please see:

    Finally Josh Hall's Gartmore Investment
Managers is still en route to Charleston. Her
current location is 680 miles from Charleston.
